- I bought this book with the hope of possibly using it in my own classes, but was thoroughly dissapointed with this book that really does the opposite of what it sets out to do. Rather than promoting understanding of Japanese and Japan, it works to uncritically strenghten many of the old "nihonjin" myths, ignoring some of the best more theoretically sound research of more recent years.

- 内容は、甘え、天下り、集団意識、わびさび他日本人のidentityに深く影響しているtopicについて著者の監修のもと、大学の学生がリサーチしたものが、英語で書かれていて、それぞれのtopicの後ろにDiscussion Questionがついています。私の通っている大学で、授業の教科書として使われています。授業では、topicについて学習した後、Discussion Questionについて、海外の方や日本人と話しあいます。そうすると、ひとりでは気が付かなかった、日本人の心の奥にひそんでいる意識、無意識を左右してきた文化が見えてきたりして、とても役に立っています。国際化が進む中で、日本人も自分の文化を説明できる英語力が問われていると思いますが、そういう力をつけたい方はぜひぜひ読んで、周りの人と話し合ってみてください。
